A concussion is a traumatic head injury that can occur due to a mild or severe blow to the head. Often times, a head injury can appear mild. However, research indicates that there are serious, long-term effects of concussions. In addition, cumulative concussions from repeated head injuries have long-term consequences.

Long Term Effects of Concussions

A recent study done on the effects of concussions in high school athletes discovered that even the less severe concussions can have long lasting effects, especially if the athlete goes back to playing too soon, or has a history of head injuries.

What Happens When A Concussion Occurs?

Under normal circumstances, the brain floats in a protective pool of spinal fluid within the skull. However, certain events like a car accident or hard tackle can cause the brain to slam into the interior walls of the skull. Depending on the intensity of the injury and the brains ability to realign, the damage can be mild to severe. Most people will recover from a mild concussion within just a few hours, yet a more severe injury may cause symptoms for a number of weeks.

For the first few minute following a head injury, the affected party may experience a loss of consciousness, dizziness, uneven dilation of the pupils or weakness to one side of the body. In some cases, the injured individual may feel nauseated or break out in convulsions.

When Symptoms Remain

When the concussion is mild to moderate, the symptoms will dissipate within a few hours with rest. The person may still have problems with orientation or vision, but over time, the brain will recover.

However, when the sustained concussion is severe, the individual may experience an extended loss of consciousness, depression, mood swings or even bleeding in the brain. A CT Scan or MRI as soon as possible following the injury will be able to determine the severity of the concussion. Bruising and bleeding of the brain is not always considered life threatening, but undiagnosed conditions can be triggered in the event of a concussion.

Post-Concussion Syndrome

About fifteen percent of individuals who suffer a concussion experience post-concussion syndrome, with symptoms that may last for weeks after the injury is healed. In some cases, the effects of a concussion can last for a year or longer.

The reasons for post-concussion syndrome are not clear to doctors and medical researchers. No correlations between the severity of the injury and the development of post-concussion syndrome have been found. In fact, a number of researchers believe that post-concussion syndrome is entirely psychological. However, others argue that there is definitely a medical cause for the condition, even though such a cause remains unidentified.

Post-concussion syndrome tends to be somewhat more prevalent among older individuals, making age an identifiable factor for the condition. In addition, women also seem to be more at risk for being affected by the syndrome than men are.

Essentially, the symptoms of post-concussion syndrome are the same as the symptoms of a concussion that last beyond the first couple of weeks following a head injury. Post-concussion syndrome symptoms include:

• Changes in mood, such as an increase in irritability
• Changes in memory
• Difficulty sleeping
• Dizziness
• Headache
• Fatigue
• Sensitivity to noise or light

Treating post-concussion syndrome begins with the treatment of the initial concussion. If you lose consciousness following a head injury, you are likely to have a concussion. If the symptoms of the concussion have not passed within a few weeks, your doctor may decide to do a follow-up MRI test to determine why the injury has not healed completely.

Often times, the severity of a head injury is underestimated. Therefore, it makes good sense to pay a visit to your doctor if you sustain a head injury that leads to the symptoms of a mild to severe concussion.

Biology Experiments for Teachers. Measuring The Transpiration Rate of an Uprooted Plant

Prior knowledge. Evaporation takes place from an exposed water surface

Advance preparation and materials

Flask or bottle. Any pair of small, narrow-necked vessels will do, e.g. 100 cm3 conical flasks,
small fruit-juice bottle, small 'medicine' bottles. Allow one matched pair per group.

Plants. Any small plants which can easily be dug up. Wash the soil off the roots and store the plants in a container of water from which the student can collect them. One plant per group.

Balance. One or two per class.

Experiment

(a) Label each bottle or flask with your initials.

(b) Fill each vessel with water to within 1 cm of the rim.

(c) Place the uprooted plant in one of the vessels.

(d) Weigh the vessel with the plant and record its mass. Weigh the other vessel
(with no plant) and record its mass.

(e) Leave both vessels in a (potentially) sunny position in the laboratory.

(f) After one day, weigh both vessels again and record their masses.

(g) If there has been little change of mass in the vessel with the plant, the experiment can be
continued for several more days.

(h) At the end of the experiment, work out the mass lost by each vessel. Subtract the mass lost by the vessel with water only, from the mass lost by the vessel with the plant. This will give the loss in mass resulting from the plant's transpiration.

(i) Calculate the rate of transpiration in grams per day.

Discussion

1 The vessel with the plant will be losing water (a) from the shoot and (b) directly from the exposed water surface. The vessel lacking a plant enables us to calculate the amount of mass loss resulting from (b).

2 The mass loss in the vessel with the plant is made up of these two components. By deducting the mass loss resulting from direct evaporation, we are left with the mass loss caused by transpiration from the plant.

3 (a) The plant will interfere with the direct evaporation from the vessel, depending on the shape and size of the stem and the position of the lower leaves.

(b) In the vessel with the plant, the water level may drop below the neck, exposing a greater surface area of water for evaporation.

Sleep May Not Be the Number One Factor In staying Young and Healthy

New Age Dawning - Breathe Well, Sleep Well, Age Well

"Early to bed, early to rise, makes a man healthy, wealthy and wise."

This short proverb can be traced as far back as 1496, and even earlier if you count all its variations. It seems that people have always understood the necessity of a good night's sleep, but these days quality sleep has become a luxury rather than a necessity. But going without sleep may not be so easy since it's not something your body can easily do without.

The Growing Sleep Deficit
According to a recent Harvard Health Publications survey, "more people are sleeping less than six hours a night, and sleep difficulties confound 75% of us at least a few nights per week." Most people are shown to be getting inadequate sleep, and as a result chronic fatigue is a major problem for millions of Americans.

But even with the sleep "catch up" on the weekends there are still those who are tired and listless no matter how many hours of sleep they get. In these circumstances, something else may be awry: the sleepiness patients feel is usually the end result and not the actual cause of their sleepiness. In fact, it may be their poor breathing at night and not the quantity of sleep they're deprived of.

Breath Well To Sleep Well
Whenever you undergo any form of exercise training, you're almost always reminded to take long deep breaths and to focus on your breathing. From Pilates, to yoga to running and Tai-Chi, exerting control over one's breath, especially as it pertains to one's stamina and endurance, is key to maintaining good form and gaining mastery.

But think what would happen if you couldn't breathe well while you slept. You'd get more than a flabby body. You'd be headed for some serious health problems. But if you're suffering from obstructive sleep apnea, or OSA for short, this is exactly what's happening.

Having Trouble Breathing While Sleeping?
Although all humans have varying degrees of airway narrowing, those with sleep apnea, or its milder variant upper airway resistance syndrome (UARS) have anatomies that are more prone to collapse than others. If you have a triangular facial structure or if you have a long neck or if you have a thick, stocky neck, like a football player, or if your tongue happens to sit higher up on your arches (see diagram), all of these anatomical factors can predispose you to airway obstruction or breathing problems while you sleep. Obesity, or one's weight is not the primary indicator as once believed for having sleep apnea.

This is why for some OSA and UARS patients, sleeping on their sides or stomaches is an important prerequisite for getting a good nights rest. The reason being that this position, as opposed to sleeping on their backs, gives the tissue around their airway a bit more openness, and their tongues don't tend to collapse as easily if they were lying flat on their backs, especially in deep sleep when throat muscles tend to relax more.

Although many OSA and UARS patients think they prefer to sleep this way just because this is how they've always slept, they may very well have made a choice to sleep this way for very good reason. It's almost like a reflexive survival mechanism, since these preferences to sleep on our sides or stomachs, may have been formed not by any conscious effort, but as a reflexive coping mechanism for something that's ailing us. This is why oftentimes when patients come to me with sinus and or chronic fatigue issues, I always ask: "Which position do you prefer to sleep in?" It's almost a given that if patients like to sleep on their sides or stomaches their airways will look like the opening of a coffee stirrer when I look at their airway with my video endoscope.

Breathing For Life
Although many of us intuitively know that breathing is necessary for life, those with sleep apnea and UARS aren't breathing for their lives. Even though they're sleeping and therefore should rest allowing time for their brain, muscles, and organs to reset and replenish, their apneas or frequent breathing cessations are constantly interrupting this process. It's like their "fight or flight" response is on all the time, even though it needs some time off. Think what would happen to your car if the ignition was never turned off. Well, this is what's happening with sleep apnea patients.

Problems with Sleep Apnea
There are many serious consequences to having sleep-breathing problems-many of which are preventable yet as I'd mentioned before, this is not very likely because so many people who have this condition are unaware.

For one thing, research has found that sleep apnea is inked with a higher incidence of high blood pressure and heart disease. Many patients that come to me already on high blood pressure medications or have a history of heart disease are found on examination to have some sort of a sleep-breathing disorder.

Some other chronic conditions related to sleep apnea are diabetes, depression and many anxiety issues. Many fatigue and attention deficit problems like ADHD (attention deficit hyperactivity disorder) in children have also been linked to sleep apnea. A recent study showed that some children having undergone tonsillectomies (where a high percentage of them present with obvious symptoms of OSA) showed significant improvement in their ability to focus and pay attention in schools if not a significantly noticeable decrease in their behavior problems as a result. As you can see, not breathing well while you sleep can have serious consequences for both the old and the young.

When Being Young Is Not Enough
Because sleeping well is almost synonymous in people's minds with feeling well, looking young and healthy, many people neglect their breathing as a simple fact of life. Little do we realize that this is wherein life originates.

People don't often ask themselves, "How well did I breathe last night" when they feel groggy and listless in the morning. Instead, most people fixate on the amount of sleep they got or not. This may be the reason why sleeping pills and anti-anxiety medications are so popular in America today.

Moreover, as everyone jumps on the latest new anti-aging rage, breathing is becoming not a secondary, but a tertiary issue in the medical community. In the scheme of holistic or preventative medicine, breathing is often taken as a matter of fact. Although many proponents of these therapies often tout breathing exercises as a means to reducing stress and improving mental wellness they nonetheless overlook this matter when they provide dietary regiments or herbal supplements as sleep aids with little or no regard to the fact that none of these regiments are all that effective unless the mechanism that allows for efficient sleep is working well too. It's almost like an auto shop owner shoving premium gasoline at customers with cars with broken fuel lodges. Sooner or later, that car is either going to break down or stop dead in its tracks, or at the very least, waste the very good thing you put in to it to make it work better. Similarly, if your sleep problems originate from an anatomical issue, like your airway, no amount of pills or supplements, no matter how potent, can effectively cure your problems with sleep. These problems need to be addressed from the source where it originates-the airway.

Your Breathing Problems Solved
In lieu of giving out bottles of air to my OSA and UARS patients, there are simple measures you can take on your own to improve your breathing while you sleep if you suspect that this may be the source of your problems.

The first most obvious thing I recommend to all my patients who suffer from fatigue issues is to avoid sleeping on their backs. This is one of many reasons why snoring sometimes ceases when people turn over while they sleep. The next best thing to do, if you're not able to change your sleep position in this way due to an injury or habit, is to lose any excess weight you've gained recently. Yet, if you're still feeling tired or having trouble maintaining focus at work my recommendation will be to get a formal sleep study or polysomnography to determine the root cause of your day time fatigue or exhaustion.

You Want Me To Sleep Where?
A typical "sleep study" takes place in a sleep laboratory where a sleep technician can hook you up to a monitor while you sleep, and a "sleep doctor" can use the readings to objectively measure and quantify the real source of your sleep problems. (Watch meundergo a sleep study.)

Although you may or may not be officially diagnosed with OSA even after the sleep study, I've seen many if not a great majority of these patients gain useful information to address any other sleep problems they may be having. Yet, most if not in all cases, patients who I suspect have these conditions, are found to have some mild to moderate breathing component that goes along with their sleep problems. And for these patients, in lieu of treating the underlying breathing problem, no amount of sleeping pills will cure the airway blockage that's at the root of their sleep problems.

Decelerating the Aging Process
To understand how essential it is to get the sleep you need, it's equally if not more important to understand how you can get the restorative sleep you need as well.

Essentially, sound sleep offers vital services to your body. After spending a full day learning new skills and having new experiences, sleep allows your brain to shut down its learning mode and consolidate and commit the newly acquired information to memory. Adequate sleep also allows the body to produce the right balance of hormones to help stabilize weight and use carbohydrates efficiently (this may be why research studies show that inadequate sleep is often linked with weight gain). Getting enough sleep also helps to ensure your safety by keeping your brain more alert and in tune with your reflexes preventing injury, and keeping you happy and well adjusted.

The Ease and the Challenges of Cranio-Sacral Work

The ease and the challenges of cranio-sacral work are the same: being present, listening, and non-doing.
This modality works with the cerebral spinal fluid-or CSF-that surrounds the central nervous system. The CSF supplies the central nervous system with nutrients and removes its waste, amongst other functions. The central nervous system registers all information coming into one's being, and gives out directions for responses. For example, the nerves of the hand send messages to the central nervous system when it touches a hot plate. The central nervous system registers this information and directs the hand to withdraw. It also registers when a person sees another person suffering and responds with sadness, fear, the desire to help, or other emotions.

The Ease and the Challenges of Cranio-Sacral Work

When the flow of the CSF is optimal and without restrictions, the central nervous system works smoothly-body and psyche are healthy. We can respond to the events in our lives in healthy ways. When the central nervous system is taxed, however, our responses can be unhealthy.

There is health present in every human being at all times.

There is also dysfunction of some sort, whether as a result of physical trauma or as a response to life events, the environment, or an emotional hurt. In cranial-sacral work we focus not on the dysfunction but on the health. We find how this person is expressing health and then invite the body to let the health it knows spread. We focus on what is working rather than what is not. We focus on the CSF where it flows optimally, and develop compassion for the areas where it has difficulties. In this way, with our assistance, the body recognizes its own strength, its own health and healing power, and is likely to allow this health to be present everywhere.

This sounds easy, right? All you need to do is listen. But to be able to listen we need to get quiet in ourselves, to let the chatter of our own minds subside and truly be present to another person. This means not just listening with our ears, but with our whole being: our hands, our bodies, our minds and psyches. When we truly listen, there is no space for preconceived ideas or judgment. When listening is the only objective, we naturally stop trying to fix, trying to find a problem, or trying to make something unpleasant go away.

The amazing thing about listening is, that the body being listened to relaxes and lets his or her guard down. This allows for an eloquence of expression, and the relaxed body communicates its strength, its joys, its sorrows. More importantly, it begins to listen to itself, hearing its own subtle messages, its own deeper truth. The body has all the wisdom it needs; it contains the very blueprint for its own health, and when it joins the practitioner in listening it hears its true stories about how dysfunctions have developed. With truth comes what is needed for healing, for health to replace dysfunction.

Working with the CSF has this wonderful effect on our clients. As their internal chatter subsides, they drop into an altered state of consciousness where a deeper, more soulful wisdom is expressed, a wisdom that both client and practitioner can hear.

Good listening is aided by knowledge of anatomy, physiology, and pathology. The more knowledge I bring to the table, the easier it is for my listening-being to go to places in my client's body and hear what is there. Ever gone to a symphony concert? You can listen to the fullness of the music, or you can pick a particular instrument, or even a particular musician, and listen just to that. Same with the body: you can listen to the whole symphony, or go with your awareness to the heart and then just hear what the heart has to say.

If this sounds like woowoo to you, here are two brief examples from my practice. I was treating an 80-some year old woman, who suffered from a whiplash injury that occurred while she was riding in a taxi. Her body was quite rigid, and at the beginning of our work together, she told me a lot about her life, and how she made sure that everything was up to snuff. Because of her rigid values, she had few friends and felt lonely. After working with her neck for several weeks, listening to its tightness and tense musculature, space started to develop between the vertebra, and the muscles relaxed. She started to talk about all sorts of things-life and death and so forth. She told me that she felt more open to her neighbors and started befriending another lady near by. When our treatments came to an end, she commented: not only did she feel more flexible and was without pain, she also finally got a glimpse of what this life was about.
Another client of mine came in with lower back pain. She talked a lot about her sadness over her inability to find closure for a relationship that had ended. While I was listening to her pelvic floor, she emerged from a deep, restful place, opened her eyes and asked: "Does what you do have anything to do with letting go?" After a couple more treatments her lower back pain was gone, and she felt more at peace with the ended relationship.

Listening, non-doing, and finding health-though central to cranio-sacral work-can be applied in other modalities as well. These three principles offer enough challenges for a lifetime, while opening us every moment to the ease and joy of our own true selves.

Doing Away With "The Talk"

Parents live in dreaded fear of the big day they will have to talk to their kids about sex. I say, play your cards right, and you won't have to do it like that at all. There is this huge misconception that you must hold back every little bit of information until they are old enough to understand. That's just baloney. Kids can understand a lot, and the younger they are when you start answering their questions, the less likely it will be that they will get their "education" necking in the back seat of a car or sneaking around at a friend's house after school.

Doing Away With "The Talk"

It all starts when they are very small. Actually at around two years old, and younger for those who are early talkers. The first thing you do, and do right, is to correctly name their body parts. You wouldn't make up a funny name for their arms or their necks, would you? Then why make up a stupid name for a penis or a vagina? Crude jokes aside, kids can name their giblets later on for fun. Parents wonder what to call their daughter's "parts" since there are more areas to address. The best name for the whole area is "vulva". A two-year-old can say this. It may sound like "bowba", but she'll get it right eventually. However, it may be tricky later on if you drive a Volvo. Kids have been known to get the two names confused!

In my opinion, parents who balk at honesty are the ones who are setting up their kids for a lifetime of ignorance, unanswered questions, and possibly, child molestation and sexually transmitted diseases, to say the least. People like cutesy little names and think that names like "penis" sound too clinical for a child to say. Well, tough. This is one way you can help to protect your kid from predators. An open dialogue about the human body can help stop the secrecy that surrounds the genital area. This can teach your child that no one ever has the right to touch him there, except for extreme circumstances--like a doctor visit after an injury, or for assistance with hygiene at bath time for uncircumcised boys, for example. Vague information about their bodies is simply not good enough.

The next step in their gradual "education" is not telling them that babies ARE IN THEIR MOMMIES' TUMMIES!!! Some more shrewd children will actually think that the baby's mother ate him. And others will think that the baby is swimming around in chewed-up food. Of course these are examples of four and five-year-old children who really should have been told differently. So telling them that the baby grows in the mommy's uterus is quite simple. It's another word they may mispronounce at age two ("yoo-rus"), but it teaches them that there is no shame in human reproduction. And that women have a place in their bodies where babies grow, should they decide to have a baby.

Usually the next topic that comes up when children notice pregnant women on the street or start getting really excited about their new baby brother's or sister's impending arrival, is how does the baby come out? They can also ask this after the baby is born when they see that mom's abdomen no longer looks like she swallowed a beach ball. Normally children ask this question around the age of 3. And there's a very simple answer. The baby comes out of the Mommy's vulva. You can go into the topic of c-sections if you like, but we're talking basic information here, right?

Now most parents are horrified when children ask this question. I don't know why. They will distract the kid or send him to his favorite aunt's house. Or they make him ask grandma. Anything to keep from telling him or her the truth. This is just stupid. By acting like there is something wrong with the question, they let him think that there is something wrong with the answer too. From this point on he thinks that anything to do with babies being born or made is shrouded in secrecy, and that it makes mom and dad nervous. Parents are also afraid that the kid will ask how the baby got in there. But most kids don't usually ask this for another 3 years or so.

So what to do in the meantime? Continue to answer any questions they have as honestly as you can to their level of understanding. Show them pictures if possible. Kids love looking at pictures of babies in utero. Especially ones where the baby is really tiny, but still looks like a baby. The embryo/elephant man pictures can be a little scary for a three-year-old, so use your best judgment. This also gives you a chance to show them a diagram of a uterus, fallopian tubes, and ovaries. Obviously, it's best to avoid pictures of the spread-eagle crotch shots in the biology books until they are older.

When the time comes that they do ask, "How did I get in your uterus Mommy?" you can even take that in stages. First you can tell them that Mommies make an egg (the diagram comes in handy here too) in their ovaries. Then tell them that Daddies make sperm. Here is where the creativity comes in handy. If you're talking to your daughter who's seen an undiapered baby boy, then you tell her about the glands that grow in that "other area" behind his penis. Be sure to name it. It's a scrotum, not a "nut sack". And tell her that when he gets much older, he will make sperm in those glands. And that sperm joins with the egg and grows into a baby.

If you are talking to your son, it's easier. You simply tell him that when he gets much older that he will make sperm in the glands in his scrotom. And that the sperm can join with an egg and grow into a baby. You can even show them a picture of sperm under a microscope. This will fascinate them so much that they won't usually ask exactly how "daddies give sperm to mommies and it joins with the egg and grows into a baby".

But low and behold, eventually they will ask more detailed questions, and this is where the discussion of the sex act comes in. Sticking to the basics works the best, since they will be trying to picture how it all fits together. And all the "don't do it till you're married" junk should wait until much later also, regardless of your particular belief system. They just need facts. Not judgments that will make them think that it's all forbidden or wrong.

After that, the best thing to do is to answer every question they have. The exception would be questions of a personal nature, such as, "Have you done that?" You simply tell them that what grown-ups do is their own business.

I know of parents who didn't tell their girls about menstruation until they were twelve, and the girls were scared to death of it. That's another issue to get out of the way when they are younger. And boys should know about it too. Believe it or not, until my husband was sixteen, he thought girls urinated from their butts. His mother never told him anything. I guess he learned about sex and reproduction from his friends.

By starting the process early and in stages, you can avoid the dreaded "talk" and avoid stigmatizing the whole subject of sex. This also shows your kids that asking questions is not a bad thing, and that they can come to you with any questions they have about their bodies. And then when they are older, they may even trust you enough to tell you even more, provided you haven't issued ultimatums about sexuality.

So by abolishing "the talk", you can open the doors for your kids to talk to you and take a ton of pressure off of yourself in the process.

The Miracle of Talking Birds

Each and every species on Earth has been created with miraculous characteristics and wondrous skills. Even in one single living species, we can find abundant proof of God's magnificent creation. According to one verse of the Qur'an:

The Miracle of Talking Birds

There is no creature crawling on the Earth or flying creature, flying on its wings, who are not communities just like yourselves-We have not omitted anything from the Book-then they will be gathered to their Lord. (Qur'an, 6:38)

This verse draws our attention to birds which, of all living creatures, are worthy of special consideration and observation. There are approximately ten thousand different species of birds, many of which have miraculous characteristics. Wherever we live, we may encounter many of these creatures and can admire the different aspects of each variety. They exhibit countless examples of the evidence of creation, through their aesthetic appearance, their perfect flying mechanisms, their expertise in migration, their nest-making skills and their self-sacrificing behavior.

Meanwhile, other species of birds are created with a special aptitude for forming social groups. Many varieties live together as a community, warn one another of danger, work collectively to find food and shelter, and make various sacrifices to help each other out in any number of ways. As God pointed out in the Qur'an, these creatures are capable of establishing their own form of communication and performing in cooperative ways the duties inspired in them by God.

Some birds distinguish themselves by their superior intelligence and special talents. These particular species are defined as birds that can imitate sounds, include the parrots, songbirds, and hummingbirds. Many of us have heard about, seen on television or even personally witnessed these birds' ability to talk. However, we may not have considered what a great miracle it is that these creatures can mimic in this way, or to the perfection of the way in which God has created them.

These creatures' being hatched with their ability to talk or imitate sounds is one of the miracles of creation and, at the same time invalidates the claims of evolutionary theory.

The Special Design which Enables Birds to Produce Sound

Talking, or even imitating sound, is not just a simple matter of opening and closing the mouth, as some people believe. A complex system is required for this action to take place, and all parts of this system must be synchronized in perfect working order. Birds with a talent for sound mimicry enjoy all of these requirements and demonstrate their ability in extraordinary ways.

Some of these species have a talent rarely found in any other creature except man. The best example of this are parrots, which can imitate, in addition to human speech, a wide range of sounds that even humans can't duplicate convincingly-for example, as the creaking of a door, the cap being removed from a bottle, a ringing telephone, or a tune being whistled. This talent to imitate, observable in parrots and some other bird species, is not an ability that can be acquired by coincidence. For any living creature to imitate a sound it has heard, it needs to have complex physiological structures already in place. Particularly in the case of birds that can closely imitate the human voice in terms of tone, stress and expression, these structures must be very sophisticated.

For a bird to reproduce a word or a melody it has heard, it needs to have an appropriate physical structure. Its sense of hearing must be functioning perfectly, and it must be able to memorize the information received by the senses and the ability to conceptualize meaning in its own terms.

People are astonished the first time they hear a parrot say "Hello!" when the phone rings, ask "Who is it?" when the doorbell rings, or greet someone familiar by name. But even though it's an astonishing achievement for a bird to say even one word, many don't really give it due consideration. Over time, they may even come to see it as normal and commonplace.

Not only does the bird see and recognize the person approaching; what's more, the bird knows how to react to a person it knows. It remembers-and reproduces-words it associates with that person. This is evident proof that the bird has an accurate memory. If we consider that some species of birds seem to understand questions they are asked and give a seemingly logical answer, the issue becomes even more complex. One important example of this is a trained grey parrot by the name of Alex. When he's presented with a red (rose) piece of paper and asked "What color?" he answers "rose."1

A bird possessing such talents is a great wonder of creation, for birds and other animals do not have free will and reason, and do not share the human characteristics of thought, the ability to make conscious decisions and the determination to carry them out. The ability to talk and imitate sounds is taught by God to certain species of birds. These creatures do not talk because of their own rational thought, will or consciousness, but through God's inspiration. In a verse of the Qur'an, God conveys that He is supreme over all living creatures: "... There is no creature He does not hold by the forelock..." (Qur'an, 11:56) All the wondrous characteristics of birds that can imitate sounds are just part of the evidence God shows to man so we may witness the magnificence of His creation.

The Physical Formation of Sound in Birds

You might assume that in order for a parrot to be able to imitate the human voice-to use a person's same spoken words, stresses and pronunciation-they must possess a larynx whose structure is similar to a human's. However, the structure of the human larynx bears no resemblance to these creatures' physical structures. The larynx, vocal cords, tongue, lips, palate and teeth that humans use in speech are completely different in birds, and some do not exist at all. But even though all birds lack these structures, still these species can reproduce phrases spoken by humans-and in the same tones. If we consider that a person without a tongue is unable to speak or that we lose our voice if the vocal cords are damaged, it's also worth considering that parrots, budgerigars, and mynahs, members of the crow family, have completely different physical characteristics which nevertheless enable them to talk in the same way as humans.

There are other differences between the systems that humans and birds use to produce vocal sounds. We produce most sounds by expelling air from the lungs through the larynx. Different sounds are created, according to the degree of vibration of the vocal cords. The position of the tongue and lips and the flow of air through the mouth or nasal cavity are only a few of the many other factors affecting sound production. The pharynx, found in humans, lets the tongue divide the vocal tract above the larynx into two cavities with their own distinct resonances. Where these resonances occur, the overtones of the frequencies (or number of vibrations) from the vocal cords are amplified. Formants (from the Latin formare: to shape, or form) are resonant frequencies of the vocal tract, the natural shapes that air assumes in the vocal passage. When you make a consonant, for example, this has an effect on the formants of the neighbouring vowels, raising or lowering formants as the vowel sound gets closer to the corsonant. Experiments have shown that two formants are sufficient in order to differentiate speech sounds from each other.2

Birds have no larynx similar to a human's, but do have a special vocal organ, known as the syrinx, that enables them to produce sounds. In birds, air from the lungs passes through this organ. In a sense, the bird's syrinx is the equivalent of our human larynx. One of the principal differences is that in humans, our vocal cords are positioned closer to the windpipe. So far, the fact that the bird's syrinx is deep inside the body has prevented scientists from obtaining a complete answer as to how birds produce sound. Scientists have filmed birds using infra-red and x-ray cameras, and have made close studies of their song and speech by means of fiber-optic microscopes inserted in their throats. Yet we still cannot explain the physical process by which birds produce song and imitate sounds.

Within the bird's breast, its vocal organ is like a branched instrument, located at where its voice box meets the two bronchial tubes. As shown on in the picture, one branch of the syrinx opens into one bronchus and the second branch into the other; and either one of these two bronchi can produce sound. Some birds can use either both sides of their voice organ simultaneously, or one of the two independently and, by this means, can produce two separate tones of the same frequency, at the same time. They can sing a high note with one side, while producing a low note with the other. And since the bird's vocal organ is situated at the juncture of the two bronchial tubes, it can produce sound from two different sources. This even allows the bird to produce two different notes simultaneously, and even to sing a duet with itself. To a great extent, sounds produced here are subsequently combined, giving birds the potential of creating rich melodies. While humans use only about 2% of the air they inhale to produce sound, birds have the ability to use it all. 3

The syrinx is located in a pouch within the clavicle below the bird's throat. The membrane covering this pouch is sensitive to the air coming from the lungs, and its elasticity and complexity of the membrane are factors that determine the quality of sounds. The sound quality is also affected by the length of the windpipe, the constriction of the voice box, the neck muscles, structure of the beak, and their respective movements. In short, the complexity of the birds' syrinx determines the complexity of the sounds they produce. Its muscles affect the air flow and consequently, the quality of the sound. In parrots, budgerigars, and some songbirds, the syrinx has a greater number of muscles, and its structure is more complex.

Furthermore, the different techniques that parrots and budgerigars employ for imitating the human voice are most effective. Like humans, parrots have thick tongues that enable them to produce sounds resembling ours. Sound is produced by blowing air through two separate places in their syrinx, and at the same time producing the independent sounds required to produce consonants. The initial sound from the syrinx is shaped with the help of the throat, and then in the mouth with the tongue. In their research studies with grey parrots, Dianne Patterson and Irene Pepperberg reached important conclusions on vowel production: Due to the radically different anatomy of this parrot's vocal organ, even though they lack teeth and lips, they can produce sounds that closely resemble sounds produced by humans.4 Indeed, parrots and budgerigars can quite clearly imitate sounds such as "m" and "b," which we normally produce with the help of our lips.

Budgerigars, however, due to their small size, are not able to use the same technique as parrots. Using their syrinx to create frequencies from 2,000 to 3,000 Hz, they then add on a second vibration. This system is known as frequency modulation or FM, the principle behind the AM (amplitude modulation) radios to be found in practically every home. These days, many FM broadcasting stations add low transmitters to their signals which, in common with normal signals, are adjustable through a transmitter, but are of a very high frequency. While the frequency of normal signals varies from 20 to 20,000 Hz, the frequency of many low transmitters starts at 56,000 Hz. The main reason for using the FM system is to offset the major disadvantage of the AM system-namely, the interference of many natural or man-made radio sounds, called "parasites." Because the weak signals of AM radio are quieter than the stronger ones, differences in signal level are formed, which are then perceived as noise. AM receivers have no facility for cutting out these parasitic sounds.

To solve this problem, Edwin H. Armstrong invented a system for eliminating noise caused by the power of the waves. Instead of changing the transmission signal or the strength of the transmitter, he changed the frequency of sound waves per second. Thanks to this system, the amplitude of noise (strength of sound waves) could be reduced to a minimum. But scientists are still mystified how budgerigars manage to use this same system.

Of course, no little budgerigar can possibly work out for itself from the time it is hatched how to apply a series of principles discovered by man only after long trials. In the same way, no parrot can know that it must produce auxiliary sounds in order to make consonants distinct or to develop systems in its throat to enable it to do so. Also, it's not possible for such a system to be the end product of a series of blind coincidences. All these complex systems are without doubt, the work of God, the Creator.

There is No Room for Coincidences in God's Creation

Most humans, with their far superior intelligence, have difficulty in imitating other voices or speech while these little birds are able to imitate many sounds they have heard with perfection, showing how exceptionally skilled they are. Scientific research has concluded that this perfect mechanism in birds is a masterpiece of design. God's supreme knowledge and art, as shown in the magnificence of His creation, is too evident to be obscured by deceitful theories. Swans, peacocks, brightly colored parrots, budgerigars and an infinite variety of living creatures invalidate any claims of coincidence and demonstrate the infinite power of the Lord, our Creator.

Darwinists insist on trying to attribute this perfect system to coincidences. According to their mentality, all the living creatures we see around us, all the skills they possess, and all their aesthetics and beauty are products of blind chance. The truth is, it's not possible to explain away the consciousness and design seen in all living creatures, at all times, with coincidences. It is purely because of ideology that Darwinists cannot see this evident reality-or rather, they do see it but won't accept it. These people cling to evolutionary theory out of their belief that it explains the mechanism of life. Accepting that it cannot forces them to accept the only possible and true alternative explanation, which is the truth of creation. This results in the complete collapse of Darwinism and any related materialist ideologies.

The thousands of examples that we see around us, but which the Darwinists pretend not to, are important pieces of evidence that destroy the distorted philosophies of those who deny the miracles of God's creation. Every person with a conscience will see in the wonderful structures of living creatures, and in the exceptional balance of the universe, the power of our Supreme and Omnipresent Lord. Darwinism and, consequently, the materialist philosophy that has deceived the world for nearly two centuries, will collapse. People will perceive the existence of God and start to live according to the beautiful ethics bidden by our Lord. The invalid system of thought that forms the basis of Darwinism will be completely destroyed, as God makes known in a verse of the Qur'an:

Rather We hurl the truth against falsehood and it cuts right through it and it vanishes clean away! (Qur'an, 21:18)

Massage And That Question

Massage is as popular in London as it is in New York. Then again, there is osteopathy, chiropractic, physiotherapy, remedial exercise, and so much more. So why is massage the number one choice for a backache?

Massage And That Question

I myself asked that question. When I started working as a massage therapist myself, I worked in the clinic belonging to London's top osteopath. I was deeply in awe of this great man. He has power, knowledge, and a delicate touch, all in one package. There was nothing about any human muscle or joint that he did not know. I learnt many secrets from him, including that most anatomy books erroneously missed listing certain neck muscles (I was thrilled to be given this secret wisdom). As you can see, I thought very highly of him; I simply could never compare. I referred many of my clients to him and still do. But after a while working at his clinic, a strange thing happened. Strange to me, that is. His clients started coming to me! This could not be, I thought! Surely, my then basic massage was not good enough for them. But they did come to see me. At the same time, I was building my own clientele and soon got busy with one massage after another. I was perplexed. More clients chose massage instead of osteopathy, and as a previous backache sufferer, that was just incomprehensible to me!

There were some massage clients whom I kept suggesting to see my colleague and landlord for osteopathy, as their backs needed it. But they would not go. So I started asking why, and got some answers. I also found what was not said as interesting as what was said. Basically, the biggest reason that people came for a massage was the human touch.

There were a rare few massage clients who preferred the gentler manipulations of massage to the swift clicking of joints offered by osteopathy. However, I have only met a handful in my entire massage career. Most people simply enjoy a massage.

The human touch is very much kinesthetic. It is also emotional. As much as the physical sensation of a caress is soothing, it is also important to feel comfortable. It is nice to be so close to someone who is trustworthy and non-judgmental. Some massage lovers enjoy taking their clothes off without being judged or having to make an impression. I have massaged women that would be horrified at the thought of wearing a bikini and men that are embarrassed about a beer gut. There is something wonderful about being accepted unconditionally by another, just as you are. Unconditional love is something that I believe we all have at the start of life, and most people unlearn it through life experience. How wonderful to be nearly naked and totally accepted, unconditionally!

People enjoy the sense of touch, being touched on their skin by caring hands. They enjoy the caress and caring, where for an hour or so, they are the centre of attention. Some say that touch is the first sense. And touch can be so nice. A touch can be loving, it can be caring, and it can be reassuring. After all, who touches us the most? We are touched by our mothers caring for us as babies, a loved one, or someone who cares for us. Why, even in the womb, we are surrounded, enveloped by human warmth, held in a nine-month caress. When we meet much-loved friends and family, we hug. When we meet a lover, we embrace. In some cultures, every meeting starts with kisses on the cheek, whereas in others, it could be a nose-rub, touching hands as in a handshake or a high-five, or even a full-blown hug. And in most cultures, when we meet a stranger, we touch; we shake hands!

It seems that everyone just loves to be touched and caressed. And if it helps their back at the same time, that is a great bonus.

What Is an Adjustment?

The chiropractic profession is a very diverse profession. Even though someone calls themself a chiropractor, they may choose from many different methods of practicing. Some choose to focus more on nutrition to treat an illness by giving supplements and dietary advice. Others choose to work primarily with patients who consider themselves to be athletes. Still others choose to treat what chiropractors are most known for: neck and back pain. Regardless of how each practitioner chooses to set themselves apart from the other chiropractors in their area, one quality stays fairly consistent throughout the profession: the need to adjust a patient.

What Is an Adjustment?

A patient generally equates an adjustment with the popping sound that they get when a chiropractor moves their spine around. Thankfully, the chiropractor is doing much more than just popping the spine. Let us consider the anatomy of the spine briefly. The human spine consists of 24 vertebrae (back bones), plus a fused sacrum at the bottom and the skull sitting on top. Between each vertebra are vertebral discs, which provides cushion while we move, and two facet joints on each side behind the disc. The facet joints and the disc make up a motion segment between each vertebra. The facet joints are the joints in the spine that a chiropractor adjusts.

Before an adjustment, your chiropractor will use their hands to feel the motion of the spine at each motion segment. When a segment does not move properly, he or she will use their hands to help the joint to move properly. This is called a chiropractic adjustment. An adjustment occurs when the joint is pushed slightly past its normal range of motion without causing injury to the joint. The patient may hear or feel a pop when this occurs. The pop occurs when pressure is released within the synovial capsule of the joint. This release of pressure causes nitrogen to come out of solution similar to the way carbon dioxide comes out of solution when you release the pressure on a coke bottle.

The reason why a chiropractor elects to adjust a patient is to decrease the patient's pain, increase the joint's range of motion, and to decrease the tension on the muscles that move the motion segment being adjusted. Pain relief occurs because the brain can only handle so much information at one time. When bombarded with information, the brain will only pay attention to the fastest nerve signals coming to it. Pain signals (or nociception) are actually slow signals. Nerves that transmit information about where a body part is located within space (proprioception) are much faster. An adjustment activates the proprioceptive nerves to send signals to the brain in order to override the nociceptive nerves. This causes the brain to stop focusing on the pain and allows the body to heal.

An adjustment helps to increase the range of motion in a joint by giving the joint more space to move. Often, decompression occurs with the adjustment. More space is given to the joint to glide and move the way it was designed. When the joints are able to move better, the muscles that attach to the bones forming the joint are able to move better, too. Muscles reflexively contract when a joint is not moving correctly in order to stabilize the joint. This contracture is what we call a spasm. Although the body thinks it is helping the situation by preventing further injury, the spasm itself causes pain. The adjustment will loosen up the joints and will allow the spasm to relax.

Given these benefits, most chiropractors will choose to adjust a patient as long as it is safe to do so. Before giving an adjustment, your chiropractor will evaluate your condition and will most likely take x-rays to determine if an adjustment is the right treatment for you. When performed in the correct situation, a chiropractic adjustment can be irreplaceable in helping a patient to get better quickly.

Is There A Cure For Fibromyalgia?

Fibromyalgia is not a new condition. Fibromyalgia has been around as long as there have been animals and humans. It can affect any person on the planet and is associated with many "Injury Factors" .The complete condition is more common in women, but it is also common in men, and I have seen it even in children and young people.

Is There A Cure For Fibromyalgia?

At a basic level, most people with fibromyalgia are suffering from diffuse muscle and tendon shortening, driven in part by multiple nerve compressions throughout the spine and limbs. Spinal origins from the neck, mid back and low back figure prominently in it's source of pain. It seems deep spinal muscles cause deep nerve compressions and traction that cause further muscle problems in the spine, limbs and head. Pain can be directly from the muscles crushing a joint, or from pain referring into the joint from the spine. Typically both exist at the same time. Headaches can exist from referred pain from the neck but also from local muscle problems around the head.

Fibromyalgia is very much a chicken and egg story. Which came first- the muscle problems or the nerve problems. The answer, for most is that the disease originates from paraspinal muscle problems. To better understand the condition, we must learn some biophysics.

One of the most important principles that must be understood is that, once adulthood is reached, adult skeletal muscles shorten with exercise, injury or any movement of the muscle. This is probably related, in part, to a decrease in growth hormone levels as we move into adulthood. It appears that growth hormone has an affect upon the degree in which muscles sustain exercise and injury.

In general, the more like a child we are, the better. This is why a child can run all day and not tire out or ache and then wake the next day and run all day yet again. This is also why most adults over thirty have difficulty running a block or two without hobbling to their car. Fortunately ,there are some people who run into their thirties and beyond. In fact, one of my patients is over sixty-five and has run as much as two marathons within a few days!

This ability is possible for several reasons. One is that most have become accomplished stretchers and can overcome the first principle. Also they probably have well-aligned biomechanics for running and likely have good running technique. Nevertheless, many of the over-thirty crowd will eventually succumb to knee pain from running .

Another important principle is that muscles that are injured during work , shorten from those injuries during rest, such as during sleep, sitting or standing. This will cause joint compression of the spine and limbs and causes crepitus, or cracking of the joint, joint stiffness, joint pain, and eventually osteoarthritis of the joint. Much of this shortening is gradual ,over months or years, but it does happen. This is why we are stiff when we wake, or after sitting or standing for a period of time. Anything that aggravates your sleep will also make the muscle shortening worse.

These very important points are part of the fibromyalgia devil's triangle that I describe. The triangle being - severe pain which causes sleep problems - which causes anxiety - which causes more muscle pain - which causes more sleep problems - which causes more anxiety and around and around it goes.

Chronic pain will disrupt normal sleep cycles by acting as a "stimulant" to your sleeping ability. Medications, supplements and treatments that block this affect will help fibromyalgia significantly.

Walter Cannon demonstrated in the 1940's that any animal tissue that becomes denervated would become supersensitive. In other words, pinch a nerve, and all tissues supplied by that nerve would become very irritable and electrically sensitive. This actually makes sense because the tissue has lost direction from its nerve.

Not all tissue is affected in a bad way but muscle tissue responds by becoming tighter or more spastic. This kind of spasm does not go away until the nerve function is restored. This is why a person with a pinched low back nerve has trouble with hamstring lengthening and cannot bend over. There are many more possible examples but remember that a pinched nerve will cause persistent muscle spasm and other tissue abnormalities.

Another important principle is that muscles that remain persistently spastic or short will eventually scar into a tight spastic position causing abnormal joint movement and compression. This will lead to disk compression and herniation, arthritis and subluxations of the spine. It will also cause joint compression in the limbs and abnormal tracking ,which will cause abnormal wear points and osteoarthritis.

This is why I have renamed osteoarthritis compression arthritis, as it is a more accurate description of the cause of the arthritis.

To understand further, the spine is lined with five layers of muscles. The three top layers are designed to be the heavy work muscles for the spine and the two deepest layers are designed to be the structural integrity for the spine. These deep muscles, primarily the multifidus and the rotator brevis and longus muscles are probably the most important muscles of the body.

These muscles allow our spines to move without falling apart. They are very strong but also very small. They are not designed for heavy work but unfortunately will be exposed to work and injury over time. These muscles become very tight and scarred and can literally crush segments of your spine. They can be released but only with very hi-tech needling techniques, or very hi-tech exercise therapy. These muscles will be the primary cause of most spinal disease.

I should introduce the term neuropathy and myofascial pain at this point. Neuropathy is a term to describe nerve disease or injury. This includes diseases such as multiple sclerosis, but also includes myofascial compression/traction neuropathy, or "pinched nerves". The most common neuropathy, or nerve "disease" is definitely a pinched nerve because virtually all adults and most adolescents will have some degree of compression neuropathy at the base of their neck and low back. The deep spinal muscles cause directly, or indirectly, most of the pinched nerves we experience in our lives.

The term myofascial pain or MFP for short is a term to describe muscle and tendon pain. "Myo" refers to muscle, and "fascia" refers to the connective tissue of muscle and tendon. Together they refer to a group of conditions caused by muscle dysfunction that lead to various patterns of acute or chronic pain. Myofascial dysfunction or MFD is similar, but refers to the abnormal function of muscle due to neuropathy and myofascial pain.

From a biophysical point of view, the base of the neck and low back are the weak links of the spine. The base of the neck and low back are most susceptible to muscle injury and scarring. The areas of note are between the fifth cervical, or neck vertebrae and the seventh cervical vertebrae. In the low back, the weak areas are between the fourth lumbar vertebrae and the first sacral vertebrae.

Although these areas are the most susceptible by design, I will remind the readers that I have found severe abnormalities virtually at all levels of the spine and, in the case of fibromyalgia, this is generally so.

Injury factors are simply the factors related to a person's pain problem. Even though many will deny any obvious injury, I will assure that person, injuries have occurred. A quick list of injury factors include:

Increased Age Repetitive Work Types and Severity of Accidents Joint deformity Hormonal Effects (Growth Hormone, rapid cycling of periods, low estrogens and progestins, low testosterone) The Presence of Stress or Worry Inherent Anxiety Level Types of Work and Workload The Absence of Stretching Muscle Bulk and Strength Muscle Length Nerve function Inherent flexibility of muscle Types of Hobbies and Past-times Drug Effects upon muscles

There are an infinite number of Injury Factors related to MFP and MFD. The ones that I have listed are really the common ones that I see everyday. The importance in understanding the idea of an injury factor, is that it helps the individual attempt to identify which factors might be important in their pain disorder.

Not every one has the same factors at the same level of importance. The identification of a person's individual factors is very important for both recovery and maintenance of health. For instance, anxiety and depression can contribute to increased intrinsic muscle tone, especially in the upper back and neck. Stress reduction techniques will help those individuals with "stress" acting as a major factor for their condition. Hormones, or the lack thereof, may play a role in the gradual onset of MFP for most adults with chronic pain over 50. Supplementation may play a role in their recovery but probably not a singular major role.

Sharing my understanding of the importance and benefits of muscle length and stretching is a personal crusade for me. The health of a nerve can determine the health and function of its affiliated muscle groups.

Medications can have a negative and positive effect. As example, some of the cholesterol lowering medications can cause an increase in muscle spasm and shortening all over our bodies causing increased joint pain and compression. Other medications, such as anti-inflammatories, can make a dramatic change in our muscles ability to combat or recover from injury. The work we do has a large impact on the pain problems we will develop.

As a general rule, the muscle groups most used will be the groups most affected. (e.g. Letter carriers will tend to suffer torsion of their spine from carrying the postal bag and repetitive strain of their dominant arm due to sorting.)

Contrary to what might be expected by most, athletes suffer more severely than the average person does because they traumatize their muscles and joints more than the average person. However, this not need be the case, most athletes are not receiving the proper preventative care for arthritis.

One of my most important points that I am often quote is ...

"Given that a person lives long enough, we all will develop fibromyalgia. The best you can hope for is to keep it at bay."

The cause of most, if not all, fibromyalgics pain is a combination of nerve and muscle dysfunction. The deep spinal muscles cause minor or even major nerve entrapment syndromes. Those nerve injuries will cause pain that refers into our limbs, head and body. They can create dizziness, ringing of the ears ,abdominal pain and bloating. Palpitations may be created by sympathetic exaggeration .Visual blurring may originate from neck problems.

The weakest segments of the spine are the base of the neck and back but the middle of the back is also commonly affected.

Fatigue occurs for several reasons ,commonly because of a protracted disruption of sleep due to stimulation from the chronic pain. Muscles will tighten up when a nerve is pinched, as Walter Cannon proved in the 1940's. Injury factors will determine the age of onset, the severity, and the pains associated with the condition.

A comprehensive stretching program will prove to be the single determining factor for prevention. Career, lifestyle, depression and age are also important.

Good news! Although it seems like this condition is incurable, this is not so. Fibromyalgia is potentially reversible! I have demonstrated this with thousands of my patients and myself.

An example of recovery:

First a plan of attack is helpful. This is war and the stakes are high. Understanding your condition is extremely important- become comfortable with the main aspects and anatomy of the condition.

No Fear. Do not be afraid of fibromyalgia. At first the severity of pain is very scary and frustrating. However, it is very important that calmness prevails because anxiety will only make the pain and your sleep patterns worse. People do not usually die of fibromyalgia, they often only wish they did.

Learn as much as you can about stretching, physiotherapy and chiropractic.

Prevent injury. An ounce of prevention is worth a ton of cure. If you are suffering from a chronic pain syndrome, do not test the limits of the condition by over-exercising or doing tasks that you know are going to cause you more pain later. Pace yourself and attempt to reduce injury and pain. Do however, try to avoid being a couch potato.

Begin with a good, comprehensive stretching program like my Stretching Videos http://www.stretch-doctor.com Always use stretching programs in consultation with a therapist because if you "race through stretching with all guns ablazing", you are bound to get hurt. GO-SLOW is the rule of the game.

Research physiotherapy in your area and find out who is respected. Some one who has the time and patience to help a fibromyalgic is very important. Within the area of physio there are numerous tools such as "cold laser", traditional ultrasound, and a new powerful focused ultrasound that can break muscle scarring. Manipulation, stretching and traction can be helpful but are often a little too painful for the fibromyalgic in the early stages of therapy.

Chiropractic can be very effective for many people. The theories of spinal and joint relocation are basically proven. Chiropractic can be effective but it has downsides. Some of the manipulations can be too painful to endure early on in the recovery but may be more effective as the recovery proceeds.

Injection Therapy is a huge area. There are as many ways to perform this, as there are needle therapists. I myself, have developed various techniques that I call upon to break the spinal and limb muscle spasm and scars. One of my techniques is a modified version of Intramuscular Stimulation, or IMS. My mentor Dr. Chann Gunn of Vancouver, B.C, invented IMS. I have made a few modifications to "tweak it a bit." It is very important to break loose virtually all the scars in the muscle of the neck, mid-back and low back. You must then proceed to treat the limbs in their entirety. The problem with this technique is that it involves literally two to three hundred needle injections, most of which are quite painful. However, there are techniques to overcome the pain of the treatment. Paraspinal nerve blockade can diminish the pain, as well as pre-medication with analgesics like codeine and oxycodone.

Some benefit can be achieved with Botox, and, in fact, I am one of the first reported, if not the first, to treat the deepest spinal layers with Botox injection in North America. I would, however, not begin with this drastic technique, as I do not believe Botox to be the solution for fibromyalgia. Due to the extent of the muscle problem, I believe that most fibromyalgics will require some form of needle therapy to have a good recovery.

Massage Therapy can be very effective as an adjunct to fibromyalgia treatment. Patients who suffer mild symptoms may benefit even more from massage therapy but I would still add personal stretching to this. Heat is important as a therapy in itself. Many physicians are advocates for cold, where as I am a strong advocate for heat. Moist and dry heat can both be very helpful. Trial and error will be necessary for most to find which works best for you and it may vary ,time to time and area to area. This of course, is true of all the therapies.

Exercise is important to keep up in some way. I know this can be very difficult or near impossible for the severe fibromyalgics. I often suggest walking, swimming or biking in limited amounts. Remember to stretch before, sometimes during and of course, after exercise. You will find stretching after exercise will be easier and more effective.

Drugs! Doctors have an excellent knowledge of the pros and cons of medication and supplemental/herbal therapy. I should add that supplements and herbs are not the same thing. Supplements are medications that supplement what you already have in your body. Herbs are sometimes supplementing what you already have but are more often new chemicals that are foreign to your body like prescription medication. All can be very helpful but should be considered to be medications with potential side effects. The mainstay of any doctor for the treatment of fibromyalgia includes non-steroidal anti-inflammatories such as Voltaren, or the new kids on the block such as Celebrex and Vioxx (recently withdrawn from the market). These medications can be very helpful. They may not work well initially but may work as the spinal muscles are returned to their normal length. Muscle relaxants can be helpful but can be addictive. Examples include Robaxacet and Flexeril. Some of the older anti-depressants can be amazing for pain and sleep disorders. Amitrptyline, Nortriptyline and Trazadone are very effective for increasing the ability for sleep and decreasing the pain.

Remember good sleep can help break the triangle of chronic pain, sleep disorder and depression. "Brain fog" may also improve. Tryptophan and Immovane are often used for poor sleep but may be less effective. B-Blockers such as Inderal can be very effective for calming a person and reducing much of the upper body pain of fibromyalgia. Inderal, however, is contraindicated in asthmatics and possibly depressed individuals. Supplements can be very helpful. There are so many of them and the science behind them is huge, so I will only list a few. There are the old standbys of Glucosamine Sulfate, Chondroitin, Devil and Cat's Claw and Sharks Cartilage. Most of these products are aimed at cartilage supplementation and reducing inflammation. I have found them all to be helpful in some way but greatly successful for a reserved few.

Nevertheless, I often recommend them, as most people do not chew on pieces of cartilage in their diet and thus may benefit from supplementation. MSM has been recently introduced but has not been shown to be the cure-all that was promised.

Hormones. I often suggest different forms of hormone supplementation for some of my older patients with chronic pain. These hormones include testosterone for men and estrogen and progesterone for women. There will be a limited benefit for pain but some people will respond better than expected.

Growth Hormone will be a major player for pain and rehabilitation in the future. Growth Hormone is very much a "repair hormone", and will allow for pain sufferers to heal faster, and resist injury better. Be careful though, there is a downside, all hormone therapy may be associated with increased risk of cancer.

Other supplements include Melatonin, a central brain hormone that can dramatically help sleep and pain in some. It also stimulates growth hormone secretion but is not completely proven to be safe. L-Arginine is one of many amino acids that stimulates growth hormone naturally and may become a major player for pain and rehabilitation.

Creatine and Pyruvate are muscle supplements that enhance aerobic metabolism. This has the effect of allowing muscles to tolerate more injury with less shortening, i.e. less MFP. Be careful though, creatine may damage your kidneys. Calcium-B-hydroxy-B-methylbutyrate monohydrate, also known as HMB is an amazing muscle supplement that prevents muscle shortening and injury and therefore can help MFP , joint pain and performance enhancement for sports. CMO-cis-9 is an unusual fatty acid ester that is not found in humans but is found in some white mice. These specific white mice do not seem to suffer from arthritis. I have postulated that CMO-cis-9 probably acts to remyelinate (repair) damaged nerves of the spine and limbs that contribute to arthritic neuropathy.

Finally anti-oxidants may be of some benefit, as they help to reduce the damaging free-radicals that are moving through our bodies at all times. Everyday examples include Vitamins A, C and E but some stronger ones include grape seed extract and French Maritime Pine Bark. Of course, it is not a great idea to combine all these medications at once.

There is no one definite solution for fibromyalgia for all people. However, most fibromyalgics will respond gradually to a combination of physical therapy, medication and meditation. So yes, there is a cure for most patients suffering from fibromyalgia! Some people can not be totally cured but may be helped by a combination of therapy and analgesics.

Most sufferers can be reversed with a consistent but modifiable therapy consisting of stretching, physiotherapy, chiropractic, advanced needle therapy (IMS), supplemental medications, anti-inflammatories, pain killers, sleep enhancement therapy and stress reduction techniques.

All of my patients that were cured of fibromyalgia had one common thread-they all actively took part in their own recovery. I insist upon it because recovery is very difficult without the patient's deep participation and education.

You must find a physician who can guide you through the therapies and "can roll with the punches", as there is usually a wild ride up and down the road to recovery- but recovery is possible for most!

Also remember that some patients have a combination of myofascial pain with other conditions such as rheumatoid disease, cancer, radiation injury, depression, or even drug side effects. These conditions can greatly aggravate recovery and may make it impossible to fully recover unless they too are addressed.

Finally, please remember that I, and other physicians or therapists are not gods but are simply people trying to make a difference in a person's life that is truly suffering.

Acupuncture Charts - A Closer Look at the 14 Meridians

Standard acupuncture charts can be purchased that aid in identifying the name and locations of the meridian and acupoints on the front and back of the human body. An acupuncture chart will accurately show the location of the14 primary meridians as well as some of the extra points. Most acupuncture charts also show the names and locations of meridian and acupoints on lateral sides of the human body. Normally, they also have the international standard nomenclature and alphanumeric codes.

Acupuncture Charts - A Closer Look at the 14 Meridians

Some acupuncture charts come in sets that may be further divided into smaller sets that show the acupoints on the whole body surface (i.e. the back, neck, front, back and lateral sides of the human body, as well as the trunk of the body and other parts of the anatomy contained in different layers). There are also charts that show the upper limbs. Other acupuncture charts will show the entire human anatomy while others simply show regions of the human anatomy.

The acupuncture chart first became prevalent during the Ming Dynasty (1368 - 1644) when the Chinese first printed vernacular literature in great numbers. However, over the ensuing hundreds of years they have become increasingly well known. Acupuncture charts appeared in manuals dealing with Chinese medicine and the purpose was both to instruct and identify the proper location of the acupoints. In addition to the reasons just given acupuncture charts were maintained for Chinese medicine which included reflexology, moxibution, massage and a number of other specialties.

Illustrations Aid in Understanding
Acupuncture charts don't explain how to needle the body but rather are diagrams that show the path of channels or meridian conduits as well as the location of acupuncture points. Because there are a great deal of acupuncture points, the acupuncture charts can only display a fraction of the channels and acupuncture points which are being discussed in the text of the chart. As a result, many acupuncture charts correspond with the specific body part, body function or disorder that needs to be treated.

A few common acupuncture charts are for the ear, foot, head and stomach. Other charts also describe healing methods of hot and cold diseases as well as other ailments.

The bottom line with acupuncture charts is that their primary function is to serve as a visual enhancement to the text and they are not intended to stand alone.
